Finding a starting point for a link building strategy can really begin with the desire to one day stop paying Google for adwords placement. You’ve already nailed down a respectable PPC campaign, with high click rates and effective conversions. You’ve effectively optimized your ability to give Google marketing dollars in exchange for some lucrative keywords that are, nay I say ,“impossible” to rank for. Paying for these keywords has been great, but wouldn’t it be sweeter if your site could receive all of the free organic search traffic?
How can you set up a link building strategy that will make a difference? First and foremost identify keywords that are going to give you a return on your investment. Look into your adword impressions and identify keywords called “sleeping beauties”, these are terms that have relatively low competition and have the potential to generate real revenue, traffic and action.
If you haven’t set up an adwords campaign you’ll need to choose a money keyword, set a modest budget and add as many keywords possible to related to your money keyword. Use Google’s keyword suggestion tools to help you find the maximum number of related keywords. Set your campaign to run for a few weeks. Monitor the terms your ads are getting impressions on. You’ll be amazed at the shear variety of terms that are being used to search for your products or services.
Watch for the number of impressions and pinpoint the “sleeping beauties”. For example I’ve been running a campaign for link building and over the past few weeks I’ve seen good impressions and even clicks for the term “ SEO Link Building ”. Once I isolated this term I knew I had to make a page, or in this case a post called “SEO Link Building”, this page has optimized titles and tags and it will get its links from guest posting and other feeds and pingbacks. I’ll also promote this post via facebook ads and I’ll link to this page with a new adword ad targeted toward “SEO Link Building ”. All of these go into a well executed SEO project to rank organically for the term SEO link building. While I enjoy paying Google for this term I will enjoy getting free organic traffic in the future much more.
Develop your list of sleeping beauties and start to build proper seo pages and concepts around them. Then use guest posting link building, adword placement and facebook ads to generate traffic and attention for the new page or post. Over time your post will generate authority and relevancy as it continues to sit on your site. Writing these pages and building links for sleeping beauties is a great way to rank for terms that are currently costing you money, get some free traffic for a change with a SEO link building plan.
