If you’ve been wondering about the effectiveness of using subdomains/subdirectories for SEO purposes, Google’s Matt Cutts gives his take on how the search engine interprets website structure, and whether subdomains or subdirectories are more useful for higher search engine results. The long and short of it is that while it may have positively affected your results previously to have more that one subdomain, the practice was abused, so Google stopped using it as much as a ranking factor.

“The historical reasons why you might want to go with a subdomain don’t really apply as much, and that leaves you with…so then it’s really a question of which one is easier for you,” Cutts said. “Whichever one makes you happier, I’d go ahead and do it that way.”
